STILLNESS OF ARTISTS

25th September till 15th of October 2026

This is an invitation:

The landscape yearns for your presence.

It calls on us to slow enough, even to stop, to receive from it, to repay it with our full attention.

When someone points a camera, even a finger - can we resist following their gaze?

The artist stands or sits, gazing, listening, snuffing, feeling the movement of air – communicating with the land all around - in full view of those hurtling by in lorries and cars. The artist in each passer-by, the stillness inside each of us, reaches out and responds.

We respond to the horizons, skies, passing birds, trees, wind, implicit history.

Our attentiveness is detected by each other.

People wave, stop to let us know how they too love each place, perhaps inaccessible due to the terrifying noise and momentum of our machines. We rejoice in the place together.

Our art is both performance, and propitiation to these places with reverent attention.

The outcome is conscious driving, safer, gentler roads, freedom to access those ancient highways on foot, happier people, freer ranging for wildlife

contented artists,

beautiful acts of creation

Through Stillness.

“Poets and artists ‘let things be’, but they also let things come out and show themselves....We are a

clearing, a Lichtung, ... into which which beings can shyly step forward like a deer from the trees.”

Quote from Sarah Bakewell “At the Existentialist Cafe” (Chatto and Windus 2016)
