Mark Daffin
An independent British printmaker whose work draws inspiration from medieval heraldry, mythology, folklore, and Arthurian legend. Born in Worcester, he graduated from the University of Worcester with a BA in Illustration in 2013 and completed an MA in Creative Media in 2014.
Daffin’s art explores allegorical and symbolic imagery, often rooted in the mystique of the medieval period. One notable work in his portfolio reinterprets a mermaid crest inspired by a drawing found in the margins of a medieval illustrated manuscript, a symbol knights would have worn on their helmets during jousts. “During the medieval period, many believed that mermaids were real; our fantasy was their reality,” says Daffin. Through his prints, he seeks to evoke the mystery and wonder of that era, inviting viewers to explore the blurred lines between myth and history.
His path to printmaking was gradual. While always interested in art, it was during his Master’s degree that he discovered relief printmaking, a medium that immediately resonated with him. “I’d tried lots of things during my degree but couldn’t find something that clicked. I’ve not stopped since,” he reflects.
