Parzival and the Hermyt Trevrizent (unframed)

£100.00

Artist Dexter Brightman

Woodcut print

22.5cm x 29.5cm including frame

“One of my favorite fairytale motifs is when the hermit offers the traveler an apple from his tree and a drink from his well to give them the strength they need for the journey ahead, so this was the scene the stuck out most for me in Parzival.

I took a few artistic liberties with this part of the story to further embellish the symbolism of the encounter; Parzival walks away from a long path that has grown barren. The dead trees behind him stand as emblems of pride, doubt, and the desolation of his earlier striving. Before him he meets the hermit, a reoccurring character in every hero’s journey. Trevrizent stands in a doorway to a cave filled with stars- a guardian of the inner cosmos, the interior of the soul where true transformation takes place. Parzival kneels before him, armor removed, palms orans with humility.
The end of the Nigredo and the beginning of the Albedo.”
