Q&A WITH JULIAN CLARK
Can you give us a brief history of Heart of the Tribe?
Heart of The Tribe stems from a desire to enrich Glastonburys cultural community. It was founded in 2018 when I purchased a run down property which has undergone extensive renovations to transform it into a modern gallery with a beautiful garden.
What is it you hope to achieve with the Gallery?
We hope to inspire conversation about creativity and help people connect with art as an accessible part of everyday life. We aim to support the local culture and economy by enhancing the premium market of Glastonbury.
Aside from exhibitions, what else does Heart of the Tribe offer?
We have a really beautiful garden to enjoy and a small event space that is available for private hire. We will be hosting talks and workshops that support creative development. We also offer an affordable artist studio that can be booked by the day week or month.
How do artists contact you if they’re looking to get involved?
The best way is to sign up to our Artist Directory on our website. This is a free service we are offering to all creatives to help to connect them with the wider internet community. Artists will also have the opportunity to submit work for group exhibitions. We will be putting out a call once a year for Core Artists with whom we work more closely, so its good to keep an eye on our social media and sign up to our mailing list.

The Heart of Glastonbury – There is a new home for art in the town’s high street.
Heart of The Tribe is a new quality art gallery at the top of Glastonbury High Street, focussing on innovative and progressive original work. Contemporary approaches and diverse subject matter will offer an alternative to the conventional Glastonbury iconography and mystical themes.Representing a wide selection of artists from the Somerset area at differing stages of artistic development, they bring together an environment aimed at enriching artistic progress. For some of the core artists this launch will be their first showcase in the professional art world, while others have been practicing professional artists for years. The gallery will offer regular exhibitions, events and talks, open to the public, with the goal of making art locally available and accessible. There is a strong emphasis on supporting personal and professional development to help foster the sense of artistic community that serves as the foundation of the Heart of the Tribe’s ethos.
“We want the local community to experience art and see what variety of talent we have on our doorstep. We want to challenge the way people view art and inspire an alternative perspective. You shouldn’t have to go to a city to attend an installation or contribute to a collective,” explains Kim Von Coles, Gallery Manager.
They will be opening their doors to the public for the first time on Monday 31st August with an exhibition entitled ‘Diversity’, showcasing work from each of their artists. There will also be a solo exhibition of work by the talented painter, Jon Minshull later in the year.
