Deborah Clarke
Deborah Clarke is a ceramic artist and founder of Creative Clay for All, established in 2015 in response to the decline of kilns in community centres and schools. Recognising the therapeutic benefits of working with clay, she developed workshops designed to be inclusive and accessible, particularly for those unable to attend traditional studio sessions. With specialised training from Arts4Dementia and Dementia Friends, Deborah facilitates workshops tailored for individuals with physical and learning disabilities, ensuring a creative and supportive environment. Her sessions, adapted for safety without compromising creativity, offer a space for joy, relaxation, and artistic expression.
With over 25 years of experience in ceramics, Deborah’s practice is deeply influenced by the landscapes of rural Dorset and the Jurassic Coast. She studied ceramics at Bath, refining her skills through mentorship from expert potters and participation in international events. Her hand-built pieces, fired mainly at earthenware temperatures, reflect natural textures and earthy tones inspired by her surroundings. Alongside her workshops, Deborah exhibits her work across the South West, earning recognition, including the South West England Prestige Award for Unique Workshops of the Year (2020/21) and the DACA Potters Challenge Cup.
“My studio is located in rural Dorset, set in a landscape of farms and ancient woodlands. The recent Leaf Creature series of ceramic works draws inspiration from Dorset’s rich folklore, particularly the oak and holly kings of the solstices. Each piece reflects the emotional shifts of the local landscape through the changing seasons, blending nature with myth. By incorporating elements from Dorset’s flora, I capture the essence of its habitats, often infused with humour, to evoke a deeper connection between the viewer and the environment. This work celebrates the cycles of nature, encouraging reflection on our relationship with Dorset’s diverse and evolving ecology.”
