Sue Cresswell

As a schoolgirl Sue Cresswell fell in love with clay, but it wasn’t until she enrolled in adult education at Strode that she truly developed her appreciation of the medium. She achieved distinction in her studies and exhibited as part of Somerset Arts Week in 2004. Sue calls herself as Ceramic Artist rather than a potter as her pieces are individually made, each one carefully and uniquely decorated. She uses a variety of clays including porcelain, earthenware, stoneware and black volcanic clays. She fires her pieces in various ways, listening to what would work best with the form as it develops.

Sue embraces the community spirit of Heart of the Tribe, she often draws inspiration from the kilns she shares with other local artists. She also derives her inspiration from the land around her, from her childhood playing in ancient woodlands to the Somerset Levels now. In Sue’s words, “I notice the small beauties that are all around us and I draw my inspiration from the landscape, trees, wildflowers, the sea, the moon, the Wild Places and the Ancestors.”
